The Mix & Match Edit: Eight Pieces, Twelve Summer Outfits

A lilac-and-powder-blue capsule from Lucky In Love and Birdie & Ace that recombines all season long — plus the Sol & Selene tote that carries every version of it.

Here's a little secret from someone who dresses tennis players for a living: the women whose court style you admire most aren't the ones with the biggest wardrobes. They're the ones whose pieces all speak to each other. That's the whole philosophy behind mix and match tennis outfits — buy less, combine more, and let one shared palette do the heavy lifting.

So this week I built a tennis capsule wardrobe out of just eight pieces from two of our favorite makers — Lucky In Love and Birdie & Ace — in a palette of lilac, powder blue, and white that was made for July light. Three tops, four bottoms, one layer: that's twelve different outfits before you've repeated a single combination. Here's the whole board, pinned up the way I'd lay it across the styling table.

Why these eight? Because every top goes with every bottom — no exceptions, no "only if." The lavender tank picks up the lilac skort and the quarter-zip; the powder blue metallic skirt flatters both whites and blues; the striped long sleeve ties the whole palette together. That's what separates a true tennis capsule wardrobe from a drawer of pretty pieces that don't speak: the palette is decided before the first item goes in the cart.

The Outfit Math

Three tops times four bottoms is twelve outfits — add the quarter-zip on cool mornings and you're closer to twenty. Here are three equations to start with, straight from the combinations I reach for most.

Formula Nº1  —  League Morning

White compression rib tank

Rib Tank

+
Powder blue metallic pleated skirt

Metallic Skirt

+
Lilac quarter-zip pullover

Quarter-Zip

The white tank keeps 8 a.m. drills cool, the metallic skirt catches the light on every split step, and the quarter-zip comes off by the second game — then goes right back on for the coffee run after.

Formula Nº2  —  Saturday Social

Lavender chevron tie-back tank

Chevron Tank

+
White modernized pleated skirt

White Pleats

+
Sol & Selene Resilience tote

The Tote

Lavender against white pleats is the softest combination on this board — doubles with your Saturday group, then straight to lunch without a wardrobe thought. The tote swallows a towel, a paddle, and sunscreen and still looks like it belongs at the café table.

Formula Nº3  —  Cool-Start Clinic

Aura blue stripe long sleeve top

Long Sleeve

+
Lilac everyday tour skort

Lilac Skort

+
Sol & Selene quilted crossbody bag

Crossbody

Striped long sleeve, lilac skort, and the little quilted crossbody for the mornings when all you need is keys, a card, and lip balm. The skorts in this capsule pull double duty for pickleball fashion too — same palette, same pockets, different court.

Nine More Where Those Came From

That's three formulas down and nine to go — the striped long sleeve over the metallic skirt for overcast days, the white tank with the lilac skort when it's ninety degrees, the lavender tank under the quarter-zip for evening hits. Good women's tennis apparel should feel like a deck of cards, not a costume rack: shuffle and it still works. And because this is premium tennis apparel in the under-$100-a-piece range, building the whole board costs less than one head-to-toe splurge — with free shipping over $50 on every piece.

If you want help adapting the formula to what's already in your closet — or building a palette of your own — that's exactly what my free 15-minute Society Stylist session is for. Bring me your favorite skirt and we'll build the capsule around it, whether you play at a club or on the public courts across Stark County.
